In ContactsLaw, any document may be related to one or more other documents. Through document relationships, these connections can be modelled, displayed and the related documents accessed.

There are several types of related documents:
  • Enclosure - Allows enclosures/attachments to be accessed/grouped according to the original message that contained them. The enclosure relationship is created automatically during document registration, however you can manually add enclosures to an existing document.
  • See also - Indicates that another document or precedent is referenced in the body of a document. These related documents are added manually, and provide points for further reading.
  • In reply to - Allows the original message to be accessed when viewing a reply, as well as facilitating conversation threading in the document explorer. This type of relationship is created during document cataloguing; however, threads can be easily re-arranged by dragging-and-dropping on the Documents tab.
  • Related- Allows other relevant documents to be associated with a document, for the sake of convenience. These documents must be manually associated with the document.
  • Redacted copy - Creates a two-way link between a redacted copy and the original document.

Enclosures

On outgoing documents, enclosures have an additional property to indicate whether the original document is enclosed, or whether a copy is to be attached. Outgoing documents sent via e-mail do not use this specifier; it is assumed that all documents sent electronically are copies.

In the case of outgoing documents, it is possible that a document may appear as an enclosure several times. In this instance, the attachment grouping function on the document explorer will place the enclosure only once, and against the first document to which it was attached.
