ContactsLaw,
members are categorised into the following types for the purposes of payroll:
Permanent - fixed hours
Under normal circumstances, the member works the same number of hours each day. They are paid on the basis of a full-time salary, from which an equivalent rate per hour is calculated. Most full-time staff fit into this category. Staff members whose ordinary hours per day constitute less than a full working day receive a lower effective annual salary.
This type of employee is entitled to annual leave, sick leave, maternity leave and bereavement leave. All leave accrues normally (on a prorata basis according to the hours worked) unless the member is AWOL or on unpaid leave. (This ensures that one day of annual leave equates to the equivalent number of hours each staff member would normally work in a day.)
Public holidays are paid as though they were hours worked. AWOL is deducted from the expected number of hours worked.
Permanent - variable hours
The member is likely to work a different number of hours from one pay period to the next. They have a full-time salary figure, but are paid a wage on the basis of a rate per hour. This category applies to members who must fill out a timesheet to record their working hours. Their effective annual salary is only a projection, based on an average number of hours worked per day. When processing the pay, the actual number of hours worked are entered into the activity.
You can also use this employee type for staff whose hours are a fixed percentage of full-time, but who accrue leave on a part-time basis. To do this, enter the full-time salary figure and then reduce the number of ordinary hours per day to reflect the percentage. It will not be necessary to change the actual number of hours worked when processing the pay.
They are entitled to annual leave, sick leave, public holiday leave, maternity leave and bereavement leave. All leave is accrued on a prorata basis according to the hours worked. Public holiday leave should only be paid if a sufficient balance has been accrued. AWOL is deducted from the ordinary number of hours worked.
Casual
Casual employees work a limited (and variable) number of hours in each pay period. They are paid a wage on the basis of a rate per hour.
They are not entitled to leave of any kind. AWOL has no effect on this type of employee.
Partner/director exempt from payments
This employee type is used for partners/directors who do not receive a regular salary. It allows such members to accrue leave and be included on payroll reports. Neither a rate nor salary is recorded against such a member's profile, only the number of normal working hours per day (for calculation purposes).
