ContactsLaw uses date-dependant settings in a number of areas of the system. Under this scheme, the options relating to a specific area of the system are retained each time a change is made. When they are changed, an effective date is attached to the new settings, allowing them to come into effect either immediately, sometime in the future, or to be back-dated as far as permissible without influencing existing records.

This scheme offers the following advantages:
  • A full history of changes is preserved
  • Changes to settings don't influence historical data
  • Changes can be forward-dated, facilitating communication and transitionary measures
However, they offer some restrictions:
  • Changes cannot be made in quick succession
  • Erroneous changes will be preserved as well
  • Settings cannot be removed once they have been used
