ContactsLaw includes an automated error reporting mechanism. Whenever a trappable fault occurs within the application, ContactsLaw displays a pop-up window and a brief message describing the error that occurred.

From this window, you have the following options:
  • Send - prepares an electronic error report that will be sent to Overtech on your behalf.
  • Don't send - Dismisses the error message and, in most cases, allows you to continue working.
  • Additional information - displays extended information about the error (typically used for troubleshooting purposes).

Sending electronic error reports

When you click the 'Send' button, another pop-up opens to capture important information about the circumstances surrounding the error. In order to submit a meaningful report, you must provide the following details:

  • The area of the application in which the error occurred - the activity/screen/tab/window that you were working on when the error appeared.
  • A description of what you were doing in the lead-up to the error - please keep this as concise as possible, and try to recall the sequence of events that resulted in the error. For example, you may have entered a particular value in a field, changed a specific piece of information, etc. By providing the order, timing and detail of these events, you drastically improve the quality and usefulness of your report.
  • If you were working with a specific record, the name/number of the record - this may be the number of a contact, file, document, transaction, bill or other item that you were working on when the error appeared. Providing this information is essential, and makes it possible for developers to reproduce and confirm the error.

Privacy information

Submitting an electronic error report causes the following information (in addition to the above) to be sent to Overtech:

  • Your username, computer name and operating system version
  • Your e-mail address* (to allow us to follow-up with you)
  • The version of ContactsLaw you are running
  • The name of the server and database that ContactsLaw connects to
  • A code which identifies your firm/practice as an Overtech customer
  • Details of the error (which may include personal information and/or intellectual property)
  • Details of the state of the application, including which tabs were open when the error appeared

* - Your e-mail address is only sent to Overtech if Microsoft Exchange Server is used on your network.

Overtech WILL NOT divulge the information included in electronic error reports to third parties, and it will not be used for marketing purposes. It will only be used for the purpose of identifying, reproducing and fixing the error, and to contact you in relation to the error (if necessary).

Error reporting configuration

Your system administrator must configure ContactsLaw correctly to be able to send electronic error reports. In particular, the address of an SMTP server must be provided (through which e-mails may be sent). If no suitable SMTP server is available, error reports can be configured to send via the user's default e-mail application. See Administering & maintaining ContactsLaw for more information.
