In ContactsLaw, you can use the related files feature to model the association between two matters, or show how a matter progresses between workgroups over its lifespan.
 
When you add a related file (via the file summary screen), you create a two-way relationship between the files. You can associate as many files as you require.
 
In addition to the convenience of being able to see the relationship from either side, you can use the 'related file documents' view on the document explorer to see the superset of all documents on the file and all of its related files. This concept applies in various other lists and ledgers as well.

Types of relationships

  • Directly related - File A directly relates to file B. If file B has a related file C, this will not be visible from file A.
  • File family - File A relates to file B, as well as any other files related to file B with the same relationship type. You only need to add one related file to "join the family" of files.
  • Continuation - Work on file A concluded and continues on file B. This can occur when transitioning from a prospect file to a client file, or when changing workgroup.
