ContactsLaw will usually retain whatever identifier was assigned by the legacy system/software. For example, alphanumeric matter codes from a firm's previous practice manegement software remain searchable even after files have been assigned ContactsLaw's numeric
file numbers. This facility is known as the
historical code.
