A telephone call is the simplest type of destination that can be used in E-Receptionist. Using the attached handset, it dials a telephone number (ideally an internal extension) and places the user in touch with the person/firm to whom they wish to speak.

By placing multiple extension numbers in a list, you can provide fallback number(s) to dial in case the call is not answered. A call is regarded as unanswered if it transitions directly from the ringing state to the disconnected state, or if the timeout period elapses without the call transitioning out of the ringing state. When all numbers are exhausted, a message is displayed to the user asking them to try again later.

If the call is answered, a dialog box remains on-screen for the duration of the call (including any time spent on-hold or in transfer). When the call ends, the user is returned to the main menu.

On some telephone systems and when operating in speaker-phone mode, the disconnection tone will play indefinitely through the handset when the other party hangs up. To prevent this from occurring, E-Receptionist will place a zero-length outgoing call to the primary telephone number of the firm/building (as aborting an outgoing call does not result in a disconnection tone).

When specifying the fallback extension as part of the configuration for a data source, you can separate multiple numbers with commas.
